I thought since the gun debate was skyrocketing across the country I would make a thread where each of us could post the stories we heard about or read each day as a way of keeping track of just how this is going and what TPTB are in fact trying to accomplish. My main goal is to be able to look back in a few weeks and see the propaganda for what it is. BS used to control the week minded sheeple. I will go ahead and post a few stories I have come across today. I will be back daily to post more stories and hopefully we will have a very clear picture soon enough.

A deal to give New York one of the toughest gun control laws in the nation is being negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who, sources said Tuesday, is hoping to announce the plan Wednesday during his State of the State speech in Albany.

Cuomo hopes to jump-start the 2013 legislative session with a big deal that could dramatically alter gun control laws across the state.

Highly placed sources told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer that Cuomo is negotiating with Assembly and Senate leaders for a package of gun control laws that would be a dramatic response to the gun violence besetting the nation, including the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“It’s a very divisive topic,” Cuomo said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of energy on both sides. Some people are vehemently against’ some people think we’re out of our minds for not passing it.”

Sources told Kramer the governor and lawmakers are negotiating furiously in the hope that Cuomo can announce a deal during his speech Wednesday.

Sources said the package is expected to include:

* New restrictions on assault weapons

* Stiffer penalties for using a gun to commit a crime

* New limits on the number of bullets in a gun magazine

“Gun control is highly political, politically contentious situation. It is polarizing,” Cuomo said.

In Westchester County, where Mamaroneck’s Hommocks Middle School was under lockdown last week amid reports a gunman tried to enter the school, the need for gun control is on the minds of many.

“There’s just too many incidents that are happening that you think could be avoided if there were stronger regulations about it,” one mother from Larchmont said, adding when asked if her children’s safety is her motivation, “Absolutely, I mean you can’t even send them to school now. Now my kids have police in front of their school. I mean you wonder how far it’s going to go.”

“I think it’s necessary with everything that’s happening,” Mamaroneck resident Gail Nubile added. “With the recent things that have been going on it does make you think that things to be happening, so you have to be extra cautious.”

Cuomo’s move comes as Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Gun Violence released a new commercial to push for federal action. It features Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, who was killed two years ago Tuesday in the Tucson, Ariz., massacre.

“How many more children must die before Washington does something to end our gun violence problem?” Roxanna Green says during the ad.

It would be quite a coup for Cuomo, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, to show progress on gun control while Washington dithers.

Late Tuesday night the sides still had not reached an agreement, but sources told CBS 2?s Kramer the Legislature would stay in session for the rest of the week to make sure a deal gets done.

A Democratic state lawmaker in Iowa told an Iowa newspaper he not only wants semi-automatic weapons banned in his state, he would like to see the weapons confiscated from anyone in Iowa who has already bought them.

“We cannot have big guns out here as far as the big guns that are out here, the semi-automatics and all of them,” Rep. Dan Muhlbauer (D-Manilla) told the Carroll (Iowa) Daily Times-Herald. “We can’t have those running around out here. Those are not hunting weapons. We should ban those in Iowa.”

Staff writer Douglas Burns reported that Muhlbauer supports a statewide ban and a voluntary buy-back plan, “but he would go further if needed” — and that “the state of Iowa should take semi-automatic weapons away from Iowans who have legally purchased them prior to any ban that is enacted if they don’t give their weapons up in a buy-back program.”

“Even if you have them, I think we need to start taking them,” Muhlbauer was quoted as saying. “We can’t have those out there. Because if they’re out there they’re just going to get circulated around to the wrong people. Those guns should not be in the public’s hands. There are just too many guns.”

The Obama administration is making a big push this week to gather ideas for a comprehensive plan to curb gun violence, amid reports that the Vice President Biden-led task force is homing in on a host of gun control measures.

Biden plans to meet Wednesday with gun safety organizations and gun violence victims’ groups, a White House aide told Fox News. The next day, he plans to meet with gun ownership groups as well as advocates for sportsmen.

Biden has also scheduled a meeting with representatives from the entertainment and video game industries.

The administration has vowed, by the end of the month, to produce a comprehensive plan for addressing gun violence in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting massacre in which 20 children and six adults were killed. The administration says mental health and the entertainment industry also may be examined.

But much of the discussion, and proposals from Democratic members of Congress, continue to center around gun control.




The Washington Post reported over the weekend that President Obama was considering measures beyond reinstating a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. According to the paper, the task force is considering measures like universal background checks for gun buyers, a national gun database, strengthening mental-health checks and tougher penalties for people carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors.

Asked Monday about the report, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney reiterated that Obama wants to “close the many loopholes in our background check system” and “supports congressional actions right away.”

Accelerated efforts to draft new gun control measures have alarmed gun rights groups, including the NRA, at the national and local levels. A separate last-minute effort to craft a restrictive semi-automatic weapon ban in Illinois was put on hold amid a tight deadline and intense opposition. On Capitol Hill, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein is again pushing a renewal of the federal assault-weapons ban.

But Congress is also slammed with a pressing set of deadlines regarding a host of fiscal issues — the debt ceiling, automatic spending cuts and the federal budget itself.

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate, said the next round of fiscal deadlines will occupy the attention of Congress and push off the consideration of gun legislation for at least three months.

“There will be plenty of time to take a look at their recommendations once they come forward,” McConnell said of Biden’s upcoming proposals during an interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Obama aides say the president still plans to act quickly on Biden’s proposals. They worry that as the shock of the Newtown shooting fades, so, too, will the prospects that pro-gun lawmakers will work with the White House to tighten restrictions.

“I believe most Americans would disagree with the idea that in the wake of what happened in Newtown, Conn., that we should put off any action on the issue of gun violence,” Carney said Monday in response to McConnell’s comments. “It’s certainly not a sentiment the president supports.”

Biden’s recommendations are likely to include proposals for legislation, as well as executive action Obama can sign into law without lawmakers’ approval.

The president already has called on Congress to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons, close loopholes that allow gun buyers to skirt background checks and restrict high-capacity magazines. While the president may consider additional gun control measures, he also has ordered his administration to examine ways to improve mental health coverage and consider cultural issues like violence in video games and movies.

Pro-gun lawmakers on Capitol Hill have said any comprehensive effort to respond to the Newtown shooting must include more than just tighter gun control.

In addition to Biden’s meetings this week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan will meet with parent and teacher groups, while Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will meet with mental health and disability advocates.

The White House said other meetings are also scheduled with community organizations, business owners and religious leaders.

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, launched a gun control initiative on Tuesday (Jan. , the two year anniversary of the Tucson shooting that killed six and left Giffords and 12 others wounded.

The couple's newly unveiled political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions, aims to spark a dialogue about preventing gun violence and balance the influence of special interest groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA).

"We can't be naive about what it will take to achieve the most common-sense solutions," Giffords and Kelly wrote in an op-ed in USA Today. "We can't just hope that the last shooting tragedy will prevent the next. Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources."

The launch comes on the heels of a horrific school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 first-graders and six adults dead at the hands of a 20-year-old gunman last month. Giffords and Kelly recently visited the town and met with family members of the victims.

The former congresswoman was shot in the head while meeting with constituents outside of a Tucson supermarket on Jan. 8, 2011. The convicted gunman responsible for the carnage, Jared Loughner, age 24, has been sentenced to life in prision. Giffords, who was a member of several congressional committees on science and space, stepped down from politics last year to focus on her health and rehabilitation.

Kelly is a veteran of four space shuttle flights. He commanded two, including NASA's last flight of the space shuttle Endeavour in May 2011, before retiring from NASA's astronaut corps. Kelly's identical twin brother Scott Kelly is also a NASA astronaut and veteran of two shuttle flights and an International Space Station mission.

Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal came out in favor of gun control restrictions in a Tuesday morning appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"I spent a career carrying typically either a M16, and later a M4 carbine," he said. "And a M4 carbine fires a .223 caliber round, which is 5.56 millimeters, at about 3,000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It's designed to do that. That's what our soldiers ought to carry."

Said McChrystal, "I personally don't think there's any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America. I believe that we've got to take a serious look -- I understand everybody's desire to have whatever they want -- but we have to protect our children and our police and we have to protect our population. And I think we have to take a very mature look at that."

McChrystal, though he resigned in disgrace in 2010 after a Rolling Stone article, is still revered by many as a top general, and his comments are significant for a former member of the military. If he does continue to advocate for gun control, he could be a significant voice in a movement whose opposition appeals to machismo.

"I think serious action is necessary. Sometimes we talk about very limited actions on the edges, and I just don't think that's enough," he said.

Asked what his message was to the National Rifle Association and the House Judiciary Committee, he said, "I think we have to look at the situation in America. The number of people killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations. I don't think we're a bloodthirsty culture, and we need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a co-founder and backer of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, praised McChrystal later in the program. "Stanley McChrystal is a guy who has more crediblity than I ever will have in terms of guns and the damage that guns can do," he said. "He's devoted his life to public service. But Stanley McChrystal can be as good a spokesman as can the five of us."

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joseph Biden will be sending his recommendations for gun policy reform to the president in a matter of weeks, according to administration officials.

The recommendations are still being crafted. As part of the process, Biden will be speaking with key lawmakers, officials and stakeholders in the debate, including the National Rifle Association, an NRA official confirmed.

All told, the plan is for the president to introduce a "concrete package of proposals" by the end of January, an administration official told The Huffington Post. President Barack Obama will call for action on his proposal "without delay" shortly after he announces it.

Last week, The Washington Post reported that the vice president's office was looking at a wide range of reforms in search of a proper response to the shooting deaths of 20 first-graders and seven adults in Newtown, Conn. Those potential reforms included bans on certain firearms and magazines, a more expansive federal database on gun purchases and violence and a more comprehensive background check process for those seeking to buy firearms.

This week, Biden and other members of the president's Cabinet will hold several meetings to receive final input. According to an administration official, who shared plans on condition of anonymity Biden "will meet with victims’ groups and gun safety organizations" on Wednesday. On Thursday, meanwhile, he "will hold meetings with advocates for sportsmen and women and gun ownership groups."

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told The Huffington Post that the lobbying group, which has recommended placing armed officials in schools as a protective measure, "will have a rep there."

The NRA's participation in the process sets this effort apart from past (more limited) attempts by the White House to respond to gun violence. It's unlikely that the NRA will support any proposal that involves limiting access to firearms. But its inclusion in the discussion does allow the White House to say it consulted a wide swath of stakeholders in the debate.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was coy when asked to address what role the NRA would play in these discussions. He noted that Obama had previously expressed skepticism at the idea that placing armed guards in schools would be an appropriate response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. But, he added, "the process is ongoing. The vice president has had several meetings and conversations so far and he will have many more before presenting his recommendations to the president."

In addition to the NRA, Biden will also meet with representatives from the entertainment and video game industries and hold conference calls with elected officials as part of his commission. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, meanwhile, will meet with parent, teacher and education groups, while Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will meet with mental health and disability advocates.

"[The president] expected and had asked the vice president to report back to him this month. I think that demonstrates the speed with which the president hopes to act," said Carney. "He is mindful of the need to act. He is also mindful of the need to have a process in place ... that allows for the consideration of a variety of ideas."

UPDATE: 3:15 p.m. -- Arulanandam later told HuffPost that James J. Baker, the director of federal relations for the NRA's lobbying arm, will be representing the NRA in Thursday's meeting with Biden.

Listen very closely to what he says. Especially the part about needing the support of the citizens to enact any real change. Well the media propaganda is in full swing right now and is accomplishing that task with many people. I see things like this and the hidden agendas tend to jump out and bitchslap me so I know others must be pickng up on this BS. What I hear them all saying is that change will come no matter how much propaganda must be shoved down ones throat. They really want us to willingly give up our guns and will spare no tragedy until that goal is accomplished.

First we will see a possible assualt weapons ban. After that they will highlight incidents where preban firearms are used in order to attempt to enact some form of confiscation. It is a sad time to be a patriot in america.

A representative of the National Rifle Association will participate in a meeting this week with Vice President Joe Biden's gun violence task force, a spokesman for the gun lobbyist said on Tuesday.

Spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said the group received an invitation on late Friday to participate and that "We are sending a rep to hear what they have to say." The NRA said James J. Baker, the director of federal relations for NRA's Institute of Legislative Action, would be representing the group at the White House.

Another major gun rights group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), will also participate in the meetings, which are slated for Wednesday and Thursday. The NSSF is based in Newtown, Connecticut, the site of last month's deadly shooting at an elementary school that sparked the creation of Biden's panel.

The NSSF said it welcomed the opportunity to become part of a "full national conversation" to protect children and communities from violence.

Days after the massacre in Newtown, President Barack Obama appointed Biden to lead the panel that will provide recommendations to prevent another mass shooting. The president gave the group a deadline of "no later than January."

Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said Tuesday that Biden's panel was "engaging a variety of stakeholders – organizations and individuals - to look broadly at the problem of gun violence in America and to consider actions that could be taken at legislative level and elsewhere."

While Obama himself said during an interview on "Meet the Press" that he was skeptical of the NRA's proposal to put armed guards in schools, Carney said the president "doesn't want to prejudge any recommendations that any stakeholder may present."

A senior administration official said Tuesday that Biden would hold meetings this week with victims' advocacy groups and gun safety organizations, as well as with groups representing gun owners. The official added the vice president would meet with representatives of the entertainment and video game industries.

Those meetings will result in a package of recommendations to be presented to Obama, the official said. The president will then announce which of those proposals he'll push.

“We are vitally interested in what you have to say,” Mr. Biden told the group. “And as the president said, if our actions result in only saving one life, they’re worth taking. But I’m convinced we can affect the well-being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm’s way if we act responsibly.”

“I want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in the notion, ‘unless we can do everything, we’re going to do nothing,’” Mr. Biden continued. “It’s critically important we act.”

Fresh off an explosive CNN confrontation between the two that has generated viral media attention, Alex Jones has challenged Piers Morgan to another debate on gun control that would be overseen by an independent moderator.



The debate would take place either on Jones’ nationally syndicated radio show, on Morgan’s CNN slot, or at a neutral venue and would follow classic debate-style rules with an equal amount of time for each speaker.

Jones responded to a segment on Piers Morgan Tonight last night where Morgan and his guests made jokes about shooting Jones with a semi-automatic rifle by assuring the CNN host that no weapons would be present at the moderated debate.

“Please don’t shoot me during the debate,” said Jones.

Jones emphasized that the second installment of the showdown would be a real debate format, where Morgan could ask his questions and Jones could do likewise.

Media focus following the initial face-off on CNN has predictably been centered around Jones’ aggressive rant on the second amendment, with virtually zero attention paid to the facts brought up by both Jones and Morgan.

As Fox News 19′s Ben Swann highlights in the video below, Morgan got his facts wrong on more than one count, and his argument that England, where firearms are almost completely banned, is somehow a good example to follow, is completely erroneous given that it has one of the highest violent crime rates in Europe.

It’s these kind of misconceptions about gun control that could be properly explored in a controlled debate setting. Morgan did indicate during his show last night that he would be happy to have Alex Jones back, but whether the CNN host accepts the challenge of a debate remains to be seen.

Here is a positive articl if you are a 2nd amndment supporter. I don't know where they get their poll statistics but it appears that the majority still support the 2nd even after all of the anti-gun media hype that has been plauging our televisions and computers. I agree that the states should be responsible for any and all gun laws. At least in the state governments there is more of a chance to have your voice heard than the federal government.

Three-quarters of the public back gun ownership, and many feel that President Obama should dump his gun-control plans because only states should regulate the weapons, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

The poll is a double-barrelled blast at the president. Not only does it reaffirm the public’s support for Second Amendment rights, it shows no change in their views despite the horrific shootings last month at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Rasmussen did find support for some tougher rules on gun ownership. For example, 56 percent believe that someone who commits a crime using a gun should receive a longer prison sentence.

But support for guns is also strong. Seventy four percent believe the Constitution guarantees the right of gun ownership. Also, 75 percent believe it is “morally acceptable” to have a gun in the home.

And as Obama prepares new gun control legislation, the poll found that just 44 percent believe that laws governing guns should be the responsibility of the federal government.

Well it seems that there may be an amendment in Obamacare that may hinder the fight against the second amendment. Me personally I don't think this will change a thing. Somehow they will find a way to bypass it. Executive Order comes to mind. Only time will tell how all of this will play out. I saw a youtube video today which I will not embed here because in my belief it is a call for violence. The man also claimed that if an E.O. is enacted over gun control that he would kll people. I'm sure he is neck deep in DHS agents by now. What I got from the video though was just how riled up people are over this issue.

The second amendment has never been in debate like it is now. There is a full on War on Guns right now, there is no denying that. Who knows maybe that's what they will call the E.O.; The War on Guns. We all know how well the War on Drugs is going right now. And don't get me started on the Fast and Furious debacle. anyway here is the article.

Good news -- it has become known that hidden deep within the massive 2800-page bill called Obamacare there is a Senate Amendment protecting the right to keep and bear arms.

It seems that in their haste to cram socialized medicine down the throats of the American people, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Barack Obama overlooked Senate amendment 3276, Sec. 2716, part c.

According to reports, that amendment says the government cannot use doctors to collect "any information relating to the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm or ammunition."

CNN is calling it "a gift to the nation's powerful gun lobby."

And according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), that's exactly right. He says he added the provision in order to keep the NRA from getting involved in the legislative fight over Obamacare, which was so ubiquitous in 2010.

This is just pathetic.

National Rifle Association president David Keene has criticized the Journal News and Gawker for publishing lists of gun-permit owners in their area, calling it “an incredibly irresponsible… attempt by the elite to demonize people who own firearms legitimately.”

“In the minds of these people, folks that own firearms are evil,” Keene said in a rare interview with Brooklyn GOP Radio. “You saw how the Gawker website listed all these people, what they described them as. And I’m not going to repeat it on the air, but the fact of the matter is, they see anyone who is involved in the shooting sports, who owns a firearm for whatever reason, as somebody that they hate.”

Earlier this week, Gawker published an already public list of every gun permit owner in New York City, referring to them as “assholes.” The move followed the controversy sparked last month by the West Nyack, N.Y.,-based Journal News, which published a list of gun-permit owners in Westchester and Rockland counties. (It tried to the same in Putnam county, but faced opposition from local officials.)

Keene cited the publications as evidence of the disparity between “elite media” and the rest of America.

“The whole battle over the Second Amendment has little to do with crime or any of these things” Keene told Brooklyn GOP Radio. “It has to do with culture and the view that different people have about what kind of a country this ought to be.”

“It wasn’t until the culture wars of the late 1960?s, 70?s and 80?s that, all of a sudden, the Second Amendment became anathema to liberals who viewed it, really I think culturally, as a as symbol of an America they didn’t like, an America in which people took responsibility for themselves and for the protection of their families, an America which didn’t look to the state for the answer to all of its problems,” he said. “And the media, the elite media, if anything, represents that view more than almost any segment of our society.”

Now this is what I am talking about. If all of this holds true then Wyoming may just become my new home.

Several Wyoming lawmakers are proposing legislation designed to protect gun-owners from any potential federal firearm ban. The “Firearms Protection Act” bill, introduced this week, would make any federal law banning semi-automatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable within the state’s boundaries.

Anyone trying to enforce a federal gun ban could face felony charges under the proposal. It also includes a provision allowing the Wyoming Attorney General’s office to defend any state resident against any federal firearm ban.

The vice president, speaking to reporters before a meeting on gun violence with sportsmen and women, and just minutes before another school shooting was reported, outlined a series of the recommendations he said are emerging in the course of his conversations with various stakeholders in the conversation. Among those possible proposals include universal background checks, restrictions on high-capacity magazines, and increased federal capabilities for effectively researching gun violence. Biden also stressed ongoing discussions about the importance of including the mental health community in the conversation.



"If you look at every one of the tragic events that have attracted so much attention, it's hard to be able to pinpoint what you would have done to assure it wouldn't have happened. But there's also things we know, we know, that there's certain actions we take that have diminished the extent of the gun violence that otherwise would be occurring in the United States," he said. "There's an emerging set of recommendations, not coming from me, but coming from the groups we've met with, and I'm gonna focus on the ones that relate primarily to gun ownership, what types of weapons can be owned."

Biden also met with the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups, and will meet this evening with entertainment interest groups, including the Motion Picture Association of America. Former Senator Chris Dodd, D-Conn., now the president of the MPAA, will be in attendance. Additionally, Attorney General Eric Holder will discuss the subject today with retailers like Wal-Mart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Bass Pro Shops.

Piers Morgan has to be one of the most ignorant news casters I have ever seen. I knew nothing of the man until his fiasco with Alex Jones but just watching some news clips it is pretty clear that he is following the agenda of the current government to a T. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) is threatening to file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he moves to change gun regulations through executive order.

Obama said in a Monday morning press conference that he will make public recommendations from a task force run by Vice President Joe Biden to curb gun violence in the wake of shootings in Newtown, Conn. Last week, Biden said some of those restrictions may be achieved through executive order instead of the legislative process.

Stockman – a former House member who returned to Washington after 15 years this January to oppose John Boehner as speaker – said taking away guns requires due process and the consent of Congress.

“The President’s actions are not just an attack on the Constitution and a violation of his sworn oath of office – they are a direct attack on Americans that place all of us in danger,” he said. “If the President is allowed to suspend constitutional rights on his own personal whims, our free republic has effectively ceased to exist.”

Well here it is folks. King Obamas list of executive orders. Much of this is disturbing for me. Especially the part about the health care laws. They have opened to door to stripping 2nd amendment rights using 'mental health' as a catylyst. If you have ever seen a mental health proffesional or have been treated for any condition you are going to lose your rights. I expect that the next time I try to purchase a firearm I will be denied due to past treatments for ptsd. It does not matter that I am fine now and on no medication. They will only look at your past. It also opens the door for see something-say something to spread to the health care field. How many people will negate seeking help due to fear of backlash from the Obama administration. I will never see a mental health proffessional again now that everything you say truly will be used against you. How many returning veterans will avoid treatment due to fear of losing their rights. In my opinion Mr Obama has ooverstepped his boundaries and left way to much room for abuse with these new executive orders. It's only going to get worse from here.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

And these are the legislative ideas — i.e., the ones the president wants to push through Congress, starting with the more pliable Senate.

Require criminal background checks for all gun sales. (a.k.a. closing the “gun show loophole.”)

Reinstate and strengthen the assault weapons ban.

Restore the 10-round limit on ammunition magazines.

Protect police by finishing the job of getting rid of armor-piercing bullets.

Give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime.

End the freeze on gun violence research.

Make our schools safer with more school resource officers and school counselors, safer climates, and better emergency response plans.

Help ensure that young people get the mental health treatment they need.

Ensure health insurance plans cover mental health benefits.

Rep. John Fleming (R-La.), who was a family physician before coming to Congress in 2009, argued on Wednesday that doctors have no right to ask patients about their status as gun owners, as an executive order from President Obama would encourage them to do.

“I came to Congress as a family physician with great concerns about the federal government intruding on the doctor-patient relationship,” Fleming said. “By his executive actions today, President Obama is pushing the government further into the exam room.

“He’s trying to press doctors into government service by pushing them to ask patients, even child patients, if there are guns in their home. After more than thirty years of operating a family practice, I can tell you it should not be the business of a family physician to take inventory of the guns in a patient’s home.”

One of Obama’s executive orders on gun laws would clarify that the 2010 healthcare reform law does not prohibit doctors from asking their patients about guns in their homes. Another seeks to equate gun violence to a disease, as it calls on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research the “causes and prevention of gun violence.”

“There are existing laws which ensure that doctors alert law enforcement to criminal activities that they become aware of in the course of their practice,” Fleming said. “And, we certainly need to be sure that people who are a known danger to others do not have access to guns.

“But, calling on doctors to ask patients if they have guns in their homes is another step toward the nanny state that Washington liberals dream about.”

Obama signed 23 executive orders Wednesday, none of which appear to put any restrictions on gun ownership, and instead deal with issues like federal information on background checks, safe gun ownership campaigns and developing response plans for incidents of violence.

But Obama also asked Congress to pass legislation that would ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.
