Now I must admit that even I have been distracted by the Duck Dynasty fiasco as I am a fan of the show and it is one of the only programs that I watch. But what we mustn't forget when these big distractions happen is to look at what else is happening. So while social media has been going wild with the DD story the Senate voted to pass the 2014 NDAA. I haven't looked over it fully but it is one more step in the direction of Martial Law here in the US. So while the Robertson issue is important due to principal we must not forget to look the other direction in the face of great distraction. I urge you all to call your senators and give them a piece of your mind. I am working on a statement to give to my senators as soon as I can speak with them. I don't care if I am on hold for 8 hours I am going to speak to each of my congressmen about this and other issues before the first of the year. I strongly urge you all to do the same.

In the midst of the heated debate over Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson’s comments regarding homosexuality and the distraction of the holiday season, the highly controversial defense spending bill for 2014, famously known as the NDAA, passed the senate.

In addition to the indefinite detention provisions listed in section 1021 of the original 2012 bill, the 2014 bill which congress hurriedly rushed into a vote in June, codifies a massive expansion of government surveillance under section 1061: the conflict records research center and additionally affirms the authorization for use of military force and expanding the Patriot Act surveillance.

The same type of political distraction has been used before. Most notably and recently during the marriage equality debate in March 2013 when President Obama signed the Monsanto Protection Act into law, which gives Monsanto immunity from federal court prosecution.

These divide and conquer tactics by the mainstream media now seem to be a commonplace in today’s society. The ability to blow a hot button social issue out of proportion, now in the case of a prominent television star exercising his right to free speech is being used to create infighting amongst the left and the right while a bipartisan effort to strip our rights away takes place.

Similarly in the case of Trayvon Martin, we saw a massive race baiting effort created by the mainstream media, while it was revealed that Department of Justice officials spent over five thousand dollars to start anti Zimmerman protests inciting more race baiting.

With massive grassroots opposition against the defense spending bill since its inception from both the left and the right, such political distraction was necessary to pass the NDAA with little opposition: 85-14. Roll call has not been made available at this time. The bill is now awaiting President Obama’s signature.
